Looking At Cardi B
The self-proclaimed "Gangsta Bitch" has turned social media and reality television upside down with her bold opinions and brash delivery. After listening to her newest release GBMV2, we are officially Team Cardi.
Cardi B was something of an urban legend, known to her most loyal fans and crazy amount of Instagram followers for her Bronx-bred street wisdom and realest of the real stories about her life. She blew up on our small screens when she was added to the cast of VH1's Love & Hip Hop: New York in the show's sixth season. With her unique vernacular and straight-up Cardi-isms, she quickly became a fan favorite and she hasn't looked back.
After the release of her first mixtape, GBMV1, Cardi B hit the ground running as a force to be reckoned with outside of her reality television career. She walked her talk and showed herself to be a dedicated rapstress and industry player, working her way onto major magazine features, radio airwaves, and the front rows of fashion shows.
Listen to her lyrics on our current favorite from her, "Lick" featuring rumored beau Offset from Atlanta rap super group Migos, to understand why we're rooting for Cardi. She openly raps about her days of being doubted, walking into stores not being able to buy what she wanted, and the sleepless nights she suffered through to achieve success. If you follow her closely, you'll notice that she has a love-hate relationship with fame, speaking sweetly of her Bronx roots and her upbringing as the daughter of a Trinidadian mother and Dominican father.
As a history loving feminist who moonlights as a relationship coach, Cardi is constantly shocking listeners with her ability to serve her perspective straight up with no chaser. She may be polarizing, but that's what we love about her. She's managed to fearlessly insert herself into the conversations of millions of fans without apology and the more she talks is the more she's watched. Definitely not bad for a regular-degular-schmegular girl from the Bronx.
We see you cookin', B.
Editor's Note: After the original publishing of this article, Cardi B signed a multi-million dollar deal with Atlantic Records.
